Frequently Asked Questions
- How can I ensure that only my computer is allowed to use Mail Direct for smtp relaying?
You can select the "Local User Only" option in the Options dialogue. If this option is selected, only the local user can use Mail Direct as an SMTP server. Connections from other machines will be rejected.
- What is a DNS server? Where can I get one?
DNS (Domain Name Service) servers provide information related to domain names. In practice, they are used to resolve a domain name (like ocloudsoft.com) to an IP address (such as 216.194.83.242). Mail Direct must use a DNS server to get mail exchange (MX) host information for a domain so it can deliver the mail direct to your recipient's mail box. You can ask your ISP for the IP address of your ISP's DNS server. Mail Direct provides two default DNS servers, 61.139.2.69 (Primary) and 202.98.96.68 (Secondary). You can change these defaults to your ISP's DNS server.
- I get the "Error: Can not connect host" error message. Why?
Mail Direct connects to the recipient's mail server directly to send mail. But, sometimes it can't connect to the target host for various reasons. For example, connections may not be allowed to some hosts in military networks, or perhaps a host may be experiencing problems. Usually, however, the problem exists in your network. Be sure you have a good internet connection. If you can get MX host information for a DNS server but still can't connect to the desired host, you should set Mail Direct to relay the mail through your ISP's mail server or through another server that will allow you to relay mail. Normally, an ISP's mail server has greater ability to access the internet.
- I get the "Error: Timeout" error message. Why?
This is another network problem. Your network speed is too slow, which leads to timeout errors. You can increase the default timeout settings both for DNS queries and mail sender threads in the Options dialogue and try to send mail again later.
- How do I use Mail Direct from behind a firewall?
You must ensure that port 25 is opened on the firewall.
- I registered Mail Direct and entered the registration code, but it still displays "Unregistered". Why?
Please be sure that you entered the name and registration code without any changes. It's better to copy it and paste it directly into the edit box. Then restart Mail Direct and you'll see that the "Unregistered" message has disappeared.
- After sending 20 mail messages, the server stops automatically and has to be restarted. Why?
The unregistered Version of Mail Direct has the following limitations:
. SMTP Sender Threads are limited to 1
. The server stops automatically after sending 20 messages
. Only the local user connection is accepted
. Only 30 days' usage are allowed
To remove these limitations, you can register Mail Direct online.
- Can I use Mail Direct for mailing list use?
Mail Direct is not designed for mailing list use. If you use Mail Direct to send mail to your mailing list, the following suggestions may be of help to you.
1) In the Mail Direct options dialogue, set Mail Sender Delivery Threads to no more than 10.
2) Before you use your mailing list program for sending mail, click "Pause Delivery" in Mail Direct first. Don't receive and send mail at the same time. When your mailing list program has finished sending mail, restore the mail delivery.
3) When Mail Direct has finished sending all mail, exit the program and then restart it.
